The change in the road toll is necessary due to upcoming modifications to toll charges set to be implemented in Germany on December 1, 2023. The new regulations, approved by the German Bundestag, include additional charges for CO2 emissions in road transport, in addition to costs related to infrastructure, noise, and air pollution.
This updated fee structure will significantly increase toll charges by up to 83%, going from 0.19 EUR to 0.348 EUR per kilometer. Under the revised system, vehicles with internal combustion engines will be sorted into CO2 emission classes ranging from 1 to 6. At the same time, the exemption from toll charges for gas-powered trucks, effective from January 1, 2024, will be removed. This means that these vehicles will be subject to the same rates as diesel-powered trucks.
Given these changes and new regulations, it's crucial to update the road toll to accommodate the considerable shifts in operational costs associated with road transport in Germany starting December 1, 2023.
