In May our Middlesbrough Team, comprising of Chris Wightman, Calvin McCardle, Ben Oliver, Kieran Parkinson, and Kara Murphy, took part in a charity boat race in order to raise funds for Teesside District Sea Cadets.
The Sea Cadets offer learning opportunities to local young people and is a national charity. Cadets learn life skills like leadership and team working through nautical adventure activities and can earn extra qualifications which give youngsters a head start.
The day was well attended and competition was provided by a number of shipping companies based on or around the Tees, these included two teams from A.V Dawson and one team each from SMS Towage, Svitzer, Casper, and Tees Bay Pilots.

This is the first time a team from Bertling has entered the competition and they finished with a respectable 4th placed time after the heats. Unfortunately, this was not quite enough to qualify for the final which was eventually won by Tees Bay pilots. Not a bad effort considering the team had never been in a boat together prior to the 1st heat!
The weather was glorious, and family members and former colleagues attended to give support to the crew. There were a number of activities taking place to occupy children and adults alike, with a BBQ providing much-needed sustenance.
Here are some pictures from the event:
We look forward to entering again next year and hopefully improving on our personal bests.
