Different shipping container sizes: Find the right size for your cargo.

Shipping container  sizes vary, and how to choose the right one depends on what you're shipping and the volume of your cargo. The size of the cargo ultimately determines which container will be the smartest and most cost-effective solution. The better you match the cargo with the available space, the more efficient the transport becomes. That's why it's important to be familiar with the different shipping container sizes. We provide you with a guide to container types and sizes.

Optimize your shipping: FCL or LCL?

When planning your shipment, it’s important to choose the right method to maximize cost-efficiency. You will need to decide between FCL (Full Container Load) and LCL (Less than Container Load).  FCL means you rent the entire container, while LCL means you share it with other shippers. Standard vs. high cube: Pros and cons of different container heights

Are you trying to choose between standard or high cube containers? We’ll go over the advantages and disadvantages of each type to help you make the best decision for your needs.

Advantages of standard containers:

  • Cost-effective
  • Readily available
  • Suitable for most types of cargo
  • Standardized across the industry

Disadvantages of standard containers:

  • Less suitable for cargo that requires more space
  • Limited height can lead to inefficient use of space
  • Lower volume capacity
  • Less useful for bulk goods

Advantages of high cube containers:

  • Extra height
  • Particularly useful for large and tall goods
  • Improves storage efficiency by reducing the need for more containers for the same amount of goods
  • Increased volume capacity

Disadvantages of high cube containers:

  • Sometimes more expensive to rent and ship
  • Less readily available than standard containers
  • Can be difficult to handle if the port or terminal is not equipped for higher containers

Avoid costly mistakes: How to choose the right shipping container size

With so many different container sizes, we want to help you understand when to choose each type of container. Below is a brief overview of when you should choose standard containers, high cube containers, or 10-foot containers.

When to Choose a Standard Container (20-foot or 40-foot):

If you're looking for a cost-effective option and need to ship standardized cargo, a standard container is your best choice. These containers are cheaper to rent and ship, more readily available, and suitable for tight spaces like warehouses and ports.

When to Choose a High Cube Container (20-foot or 40-foot):

High cube containers offer extra capacity and are ideal for taller or bulkier cargo. The additional height provides more room for goods that take up more volume. If you're shipping larger items that require more height, a high cube container is the way to go. It can also reduce the need for multiple containers, streamlining your storage.

When to Choose a 10-foot Container:

For smaller loads and limited spaces, a 10-foot container is a practical option. It's perfect for small quantities of goods and easy to handle and store. If your business is shipping over shorter distances, this is a great alternative.
